Mystery Items – Can You Help?
Every so often, while going through the collection, I uncover documents or photographs that I can’t date or fully identify. This page is dedicated to those mysteries.
If you recognise anything—people, places, events, or even small details—please get in touch.
Your knowledge could help piece together important parts of circus history.
If you can shed any light on these items,
All help is genuinely appreciated.
This is one of the most striking images I’ve discovered in the archives, and a personal favourite.
If anyone has any information, context, or recollections about this photograph, I would be very grateful to hear them

During the 1950s and 60s, the inside cover of the Tower Circus programmes always featured a photo of Charlie alongside one of the Circus sets. I’ve just posted three of them.
Can anyone name the Circusettes shown in the pictures with Charlie?
Any info on the year or season for each one would also be really helpful.
Looking forward to seeing what memories people have!

Here’s Jimmy Buchanan – little Jimmy – in a very familiar mode, halfway up a ladder with a leaking bucket of water while Charlie is completely unsuspecting below! We all know exactly what’s about to happen!
Note the two buckets at the foot of the ladder… draw your own conclusions! I think this is one of the best action shots ever taken.
Does anyone know which entrée this was from, and roughly which year?
Often the clues are in the decoration of the ring fence and the ring floor. I really need to dig out Daniel’s original sketches to help identify the ring fence designs and match up the seasons.
Any memories or details would be greatly appreciated.

I’m on the Photos again this time, and one of the pictures is from the Blackpool Tower archives. It shows Charlie in a boxing ring.
Does anyone remember anything about this?
- What was the entrée / routine?
- Which year or season would this have been?
- Any memories of seeing it live?
I’d be really interested to know any details or recollections you can share.

And here’s another one for you…
Who is the lady in the large spotty bow tie and elegant hat, featured in the two black-and-white photos? We think it may be Eve Boswell — does anyone agree, or know for certain?
While we’re at it, there’s also a small photo above the mirror in Charlie’s dressing room. Could these be Jean , Marie, and Eugene – Charlie’s parents?
Any confirmation or memories would be really appreciated.

Turns out this is Charlie Jnr, However still need to know the year and what is happening, ill ask Jnr when i see him on 20th December!

This is Tony Eldridge in the guise of Blue Bottle, (a former Clowns International Secretary) from the memory of our good friend John Cooper,
